THE CHARACTER

Character Name: Clair
Series: Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Canon Point: Post-game
Character Age: 18
Background: Have you ever seen such physical perfection?

To elaborate a little, since the wiki doesn’t really delve into her background: Clair is a member of a noble Zofian family. She spent her childhood tagging along after her older brother, Clive, and their childhood friend, Fernand, a member of another noble house. Since they were about nine years older than her, she was more of a nuisance than much else, but Clive still doted on his younger sister, and so she grew up idolizing him.

Both Clive and Fernand joined the knights of Zofia, and this is what seems to have driven her to join the knights as well once she was old enough. When Desaix staged his coup and killed the Zofian king, she joined the newly founded Deliverance along with Clive in order to oppose him.

Unfortunately, their little rebellion doesn’t go so hot, and that’s where Alm steps in.

Personality:

Clair was raised as a proud noble of Zofia — meaning that she’s had a ridiculously privileged life, never wanting for anything. (She even mentions that her family has four villas, one for each season of the year.) As a result, she speaks very formally and uses a lot of antiquated language compared to Alm and the other commoners in the game — she even goes a little above and beyond even the other nobles. She puts a lot of importance on propriety and respect and while she isn’t arrogant, she does have a lot of pride, both in her station and as a part of her personality. She also expects others to listen to her when she speaks, meaning that she can be a little imperious and overbearing.

Her privilege has also led her to become incredibly sheltered and completely oblivious to how normal people live — she claims to have never met a villager before Alm, who surprises her by not being covered in manure. You know, since, as a villager, he must work in the fields with the cows and the pigs and such.

As a result, she can come across a little tone deaf and insensitive — Lukas has to remind her to be more considerate of Alm’s feelings after she unwittingly maligns his home — but this comes from a lack of knowledge rather than any ill intent. Ultimately, Clair is very well-meaning at heart, and is quick to apologize when she realizes that she’s given offense.

These good intentions mean she takes to learning about the common people with a will. While she can make the occasional faux pas, she has a genuine interest in learning how others live, judging by her eagerness to learn more about village life from Alm. She subscribes to Clive’s (radical, for the setting) belief that all men (and women) are equally capable, whatever class they were born into, and this is reflected in how she strives to treat others as fairly as possible, and see to it that others do the same — she even steps in to defend Alm and the other village kids when Fernand, a dear friend of hers, insults them.

In this vein, Clair is a person who holds onto her convictions strongly, and she isn’t afraid to voice her opinions. For example, when Gray confesses that he’s in love with her after all of five minutes, she tells him off for being ridiculous — not to mention for not considering her feelings at all. She’s stubborn about her beliefs, almost to an immovable degree — but that doesn’t mean that she won’t make amends when she’s wrong, nor give someone another chance. Ultimately, she apologizes to Gray for being so harsh on him, and says that she’ll give him another shot.

Even though she was raised in a strict hierarchical society, she is still free-spirited and strong-willed enough to break convention when she wants to, and not give a fuck what other people think about it. Her dream was to become a knight, in spite of the fact that not many women do, and so that’s what she did. And when Fernand tells her (maybe not for the first time) that she should do something more ladylike than play at knighthood, she doesn’t hesitate to tell him that he’s full of shit and she’ll do whatever she likes. But, like, a lot more long-windedly.

When all’s said and done, though, Clair is kind, caring, and sympathetic of others. She wants to help make the world a better place, and to protect those that are weaker than her. Despite her imperiousness, she’s very friendly and outgoing and even has a little bit of a playful streak, such as when she tricks Delthea into saying nice things about her weirdo brother, Luthier. She can also be a little awkward in some social situations, probably as a result of her sheltered upbringing — she doesn’t seem to know how to act around Alm in their earlier supports, for instance, because she has a little crush on him.
